Life is a cake stacked in layers galore. Phases of life, extravagant memories and cherished moments stand as layers, each decorated uniquely and serving different purposes. Each of us prioritize our cake differently, but we all invest in them.
Some devote their time and energy to the bottom layers, preferring to be short and sturdy rather than tall and wobbly. Others care only about what other people see, making their cake a grand display but fragile beneath the surface. Cakes come in all shapes, sizes and looks—short, fat, thin, tall, wide, narrow, ugly, pretty, tasty, and not so tasty. Some tiers appease eyes and tongues; others just eyes, still others just taste buds. One tier will be under our control; another is the result of catastrophe and chaos. Some leave us with a bitter taste; others leave us craving more. No two cakes are the same, but all can be enjoyed. Enjoyment from our cake comes not from attempting to control the masterpiece, but finding enjoyment in the work of the Master. Certain tiers that would never make our cut made His for us. Sometimes (ok, often times) we don’t like it at that particular moment, but He always invites us to taste its splendidness. We can refuse that taste, but if we partake, we never regret it. God is our Cake Artist. He mixes, blends, bakes, designs, and decorates. He does it all, and He does it perfectly according to His sovereign recipe. The last thought in our minds when salivating over a magnificent cake is the ingredients that went into crafting it. Ingredients make the cake. Literally. We don’t often think about it, but individual ingredients aren’t the most appetizing of dishes. A handful of flower doesn’t make our Top 10 when desiring something sweet, nor do raw eggs or vanilla extract. But can there be a cake without them? Our Cake Artist is a master transformer. He takes not-so-pleasant ingredients and transforms them into outlandishly delicious morsels that render us craving more. A secret exists in His recipe, though. His secret is us. If we do not let Him beat, grind, make, prune, and form, we never experience the full beauty or substance of our cake He desires to make. True, He’s making the cake with or without our submission, but how much better to savor than to miss the creation entirely! He divinely orchestrates every morsel of our lives—preparing it to be a tier, decorative piece, or frosting. Each portion flavors the whole and complements others, yet we often miss it entirely because we never move on from the pain endured in one particular tier. We must not let our stinted understanding of His choice ingredient mar our appreciation of the completed tier or decorative piece. Avoiding this travesty comes only through one venue—making His perspective our own. We may not be permitted insight into His full recipe, but we are given a picture of the final design—union with Christ via the Gospel. His revelation of details emerges in various forms, but the details shouldn’t be our focus. Standing with Him united in eternal glory should consume our minds and be the lens through which we perceive every aspect of our lives. To see the details we must embrace the whole. We must let Him craft our particular cake in accordance with His sovereign design. He knows best and is the only One who can take us there. Yield to the Master. Though it hurts at times, let Him transform every aspect of your life and being into the masterpiece He created it to be. The final reveal is coming, and He desires you to enjoy it fully.
